As you read this we will just be coming into the Silly Season. The lead up to Christmas and New Year is often a time when we are distracted by everything that is going on around
us.
We have more parties and functions to celebrate the end of the year. We start to get ready for a break or a holiday if you are having one, we start to worry about kids and child minding while we are at work and they have a 6-8 week break.
So it is easy to lose focus on what we are meant to be doing at work!
If you are a leader or a safety person please make sure that you put in a bit of extra effort in the next few weeks to keep your people engaged and focused on not getting hurt. Run a few extra toolbox talks, share a couple of extra safety stories or arrange something that will make
sure that no one gets hurt in the lead up to Christmas.
There is no time that it is ok to get hurt, but the Christmas and New Year period is probably the worst time that anyone can have an injury because it just changes it for everyone involved!
When was the last time you started a Health Challenge?
Lose a couple of Kilo’s, Finish a fun run or longer distance run, Do a bike ride?....... Did you achieve it? I’ve started one…. Sort of!
I was speaking with my brother in law a while back and he told me that he’d had some tests done and one of his results was a bit of a worry. He said that the doctor suggested that he give the alcohol a miss for a while.
My BIL and I spoke about this and
we decided to give it a rest for a minimum of 6 weeks, that was 3 weeks ago.
So I’m happy to say that I haven’t had a drink for over 3 weeks and I actually am noticing a difference. I’m not sure if it is all in my head but I seem to have a little more energy, I am sleeping deeper (not longer) and I wake up much easier in the morning.
The first week was interesting as at the end of the day I would be automatically tempted to go to the fridge and grab a beer, so it was a conscious fight to have tea or water instead.
Anyway I just wanted to share this with you, for those of you who decide to take on a health kick or challenge I would urge you to give it a go.
In my recent post "Just Keeps Giving", I spoke about how I broke both of my feet and shared my recovery journey following surgery.
Part of this recovery journey was being "assigned" to living in moonboots for 22 weeks and getting around in a wheelchair for 5 weeks. I had said that the wheelchair presented a list of challenges I had faced and therefore thought it was time to share those with you.
Since sustaining a brain injury and challenged by mental health as a result of my brain injury in 2013, I have always said to people to be thankful for what we have. Unfortunately it isn’t until we no longer have the ability to function like we once did, that we learn how much in life we take for granted.
So, my latest reflection on taking things for granted is being able to walk. Don’t feel sorry for me for I can walk now and my broken feet have had surgery to repair them unlike many people that have a life changing impact where they can no longer have movement from the waist down for the rest of their life or worse.
We are building a house at the moment, we subdivided a block of land and we are building a rental property on it. So we are dealing with builders, carpenters, roofers, electricians, plasterers and all the other trades required to build a building.
I’m so disappointed at the state of the building site! It’s an absolute pig sty. They leave off cuts and excess
materials lying around, there is a bin overflowing and they just throw empty drink containers, lunch wrappers and chip packets on the ground when they are finished with them. I watched some tradies the other day have to climb and step over offcuts of plaster that were just lying on the ground.
It got me thinking that this can’t be a safe workplace.
I have raised my concerns with the building supervisor
and he is coming out for a meeting so I can show him and hopefully get him to clean it up a bit.
For those of you who work in areas where there is waste as part of your job, try and leave a few minutes each day to clean up and remove some of the trip hazards and obstacles around your work area.
We now have a new page on our website where you can download any images for your use to promote a Safety Speaker visit to your business or workplace.
This is where you will find high resolution corporate and not so corporate images of all our Safety Speakers.
There are Posters for each Speaker that you
can print, add date, session times and location to post around your work site. Or even use these images to create your own flyers & posters with your branding.
Make sure you contact us if there is something specific that you would like.
These are the locations we will be in during the next couple of months. If you would like someone to visit your workplace please get in touch and we will see if we can do it while we are there. It will save you some travel costs….
I sent a message to the other Safety Speakers late last year and asked them to give me a statement or a sentence about what they enjoy about sharing their stories.
