Do you think we will all look back on this in years to come and say...
'What did you do in 2020 during the Virus?'
How has it or will it change your life?
For me it has been huge, I went from having work lined up many months ahead to having nothing and being stuck at home for the last nearly 3 months.
But here’s another thing to think about how getting hurt can change things for you.
My chance of getting a job or finding work elsewhere is a lot less than someone who is not in a
wheelchair.
Now I know all the political correctness and equal opportunities policies and are in place. But the reality is that it is harder for someone with an existing injury or a disability to find a job than someone who does not have one.
I’m not asking for sympathy here or for you to feel sorry for me in any way, I have some part time work lined up and I’m busy working on my business for when things pick up.
But I wanted you to understand that when you get hurt it changes things for you when it happens, but in many cases it can change things for
the rest of your life.
Don’t hurt yourself people, it really sucks. Woody
What we have been up to?
Lockdown has been different for everyone, so just to give you an idea, here are some of the things the CNBSafe Team have all been up to...
Woody Absolutely hating home schooling but I have the cleanest cars in the street!
Michelle I worked from home for 7 weeks which was ‘different’ but I also struggled emotionally by not being able to have access to visit my mother who is in residential care and on top of that, her partner passed away. (non COVID related)
Smithy I have been conducting and participating in 1-2 virtual training sessions per day/6 days a week for the last 8 weeks for the Australian wheelchair rugby team. I need a holiday!
Bek I thought once lockdown hit I would be video gaming all the time...but have been renovating my daughter's room instead.
Mick I have gone through a journey of self-discovery by coming to terms that I am a great Lived Experience Motivational Speaker and not so great Home Renovator…just ask my wife!
Sykesy I have been working on my ‘Castaway’ look (growing beard and getting fit), while appreciating spending quality time connecting with my family. Looking forward to getting back to making a difference to the safety and mental health of others ASAP too.
Ness Became a paint by numbers expert, craft teacher and
keeping two business’s running during these crazy times.
Sandy I've been gardening, cleaning out cupboards and baking, but mostly enjoying the extra family time we've been able to spend together.
Alan I found out how much I miss flying to locations doing what we do delivering our safety message and I even resorted to face fixing so I don’t scare people when we start again.
Hey I’m just saying….. But teachers deserve more money!
How many of you have been doing home schooling over the last couple months?
It’s F#@king hard work!
There has been days where I have really struggled with some of the work, struggled with my daughter's 3 second attention span, struggled with my my attention span.
One day I spent an hour trying to do a grade 3 maths challenge….Seriously!
I have a sister who is a teacher and for years I used to laugh when she told me about how hard it was some days to keep 30 kids interested and eager to learn. I used to think to myself…. Ha, you work 6 hours a
day 5 days a week and you get shitloads of time off each year.
To my sister and all the teachers out there I apologise and I really admire your career choices. I will vote for any government that immediately doubles teachers wages.
Here’s something that is slightly off topic, but still worth discussing.
How do you deal with something that is annoyingly frustrating?
Here’s a hypothetical...
You are building a house, it’s nearly completed so you ask the builder if you can get it landscaped (at your cost) the builder comes back to you and says 'Yes, as long as you liaise with the supervisor.'
So one day the supervisor is out on site and you take your landscape plans to show him and ask him a specific question. He gives you an answer and then you instruct your landscapers to proceed based on the answer he gave
you.
Fast forward a couple of weeks and the builder calls you to tell you that the final inspection has been knocked back because the house does not comply because the work the landscapers did was not on the house plan.
So you say to the builder... 'But I specifically asked the supervisor that question.' He says 'He doesn’t work for me any more so
it’s not my problem and you will have to rip the landscaping up to get compliance'.
Ok...so what would you do?
I know there are channels or processes that you can take, legal options, appeals etc. Keep in mind that you are paying a loan or mortgage on the property and just want it finished as soon as possible.
Or do you just give in, get the
landscaping fixed so it does comply and never deal with the dickhead builder again?
Frustrating huh???
(Builders details available on request…… Just Kidding… : )
I sent a message to the other Safety Speakers late last year and asked them to give me a statement or a sentence about what they enjoy about sharing their stories.
