GOLD for Steelers at Rio Paralympics
I want to start this newsletter by congratulating all of the Paralympic athletes that have recently returned from Rio. Our focus at C&B Safe Safety Speakers is to stop people from getting hurt..... But I respect & admire those who do continue to pursue excellence in sport, particularly the ones that acquire an injury resulting in a disability.
Greg Smith is one of our Safety Speakers, and I won't waffle on about Smithy's achievements, but if you do get a minute Google Greg Smith Paralympian..... and you will see some of his amazing feats as an athlete.
But Smithy was not content to leave it there. For the last 4 years Greg has worked with the Steelers Wheelchair Rugby team as their Strength & Conditioning Coach...this has no doubt played a large part in the team winning the Gold medal in Rio.
Awesome job by the Steelers &
congratulations to Greg for his role.
Footnote:
Now Greg's commitments to the Steelers & Paralympics have eased off he is now available for workplace visits to share the story of his injury.

Moving House
I don't want to sound like I'm whingeing here but I am not enjoying moving house. I mean it's bad enough for those of you who are able bodied. But the frustration for me is that I have to rely on other people to do things that I should be able to do.
Sure I can get movers in, I can rely on family & friends to help out..... But you have no idea how frustrating it is to not be able to do things.
I had to build some shelves for my shed the other day, I bought some self assembly kits from Bunnings. Now I reckon it would have taken me 20-30 minutes to put these together if I could walk & stand up!..... But it took me over an hour to do each one! And then I had to ask Vanessa to help me do the top shelf because it was too high for me!
I have to tell you there was some swearing going on in the shed that day!
Working with a Wing man
Michelle Rath
I was recently invited along with James to co share our stories to staff at Murphy Pipe & Civil in Woleebee Creek, Queensland. When we venture to these remote areas/camps it's always a worthwhile experience and I can honestly say that I do walk away having grown both as a person as well as a presenter. I am also humbled by businesses looking to take safety seriously knowing the impact an accident can have on so many.
Having James as my 'wing man' also gave me the chance to finally see him share his story and if I am honest with our readers, I was more nervous presenting in front of James than our captive audience.
(I'd never tell him that though) ☺
We are often asked how we find the strength to talk about our journey’s. It's certainly not easy, in fact it's mentally exhausting as we relive what actually brings us to you. Par of the course when travelling to our clients is actually getting there and home safely to our families. And when I say we have experiences, this trip was no exception as we had flight delay after delay. And I’m not going to complain as Qantas had our safety as their utmost priority.
So in short, picture this. ..
A 2 hour drive for both James and myself to catch our flight to Brisbane, 3 delays meant we missed our connecting flights to our respective states. Qantas had a car waiting for me on the tarmac to make sure I made my Adelaide flight and James too was in good hands making his Melbourne flight home. All in all, it was a very long and tiring day for us both.
But 4 good things to come of this from my perspective was:
1. We arrived home safely to our loved ones
2. We do what we do because we want our stories to make a difference to the lives of others and ultimately hope our audience never have to live the life we do
3. Working closely with my colleague James gave way to a tirade of respect and understanding. I always imagined I ‘got it’ with how much James life must have changed from the time of his accident BUT until you walk in the shoes of another, you will never truly understand. 4.CNB Safe Facebook likers would have noted a selfie with a difference as I honoured James traditional plane selfie
