Welcome to the October Edition of Wheels in Motion
What a Month... Safety Month!! 9 Weeks till Christmas... Greg worked at the Invictus Games Massive thank you to all the business that supported us this Safety Month!
It seems like every day is an awareness day, every week is a significant week and every month is a month that draws attention to something.
This month was supposed to be Safety Month, but if you get a chance Google some of the other events that were on this month?
Mental Health Awareness Month, World Mental Health Day, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, International Walk to school day, Ride to Work Day…… and hundreds more.
My point here is that each of these days is significant to someone, if you know someone that has had breast cancer then you are aware of the days and events that tries to educate or bring attention to the subject.
For those of us that have experienced a workplace injury then Safety Month is a time that I often think about others that have been hurt doing their job. I know how my accident changed my life, how it affected many other people and how I still wish it had never happened even 30 years later.
All I can say is I hope none of you ever have the day that changes your life.
Heading into the most hectic and often dangerous time of the year.
In the lead up to Christmas many of us get distracted by the holidays, what we are doing with kids, the extra stress and busyness’ and we can often not pay as much attention as we
normally do.
For those of you in a safety role it might be a good time to look at what you can do to keep employees focused, put on a training session, bring in a speaker, show a video.
Anything you can do to make your people keep their mind on the job and staying safe.
One of our Safety Speakers was asked to help out with some commentary on the Invictus Games last week in Australia. Greg Smith shares his story about fatigue and how it caused him to break his neck and damage his spinal cord… but Greg has also competed at 5… yes 5 Paralympic Games....3 in wheelchair racing and 2 in wheelchair rugby.
Greg is the current strength and conditioning coach for the Australian Wheelchair Rugby Team and added his knowledge to the commentary team for the Invictus Games.
Speaking of Safety Month I have to acknowledge some of the things that workplaces have done this year. Our safety Speakers have been to every state and territory in Australia this month.
It’s been great to see some of the activities that have been run to show employees the importance of staying safe while doing their job.
