I have been doing some work with Caterpillar Australia over the last few years. They put a lot of apprentices on each year and they ask me to speak to their apprentices and try to get them to realise that if they get hurt it will change their lives.
Now Caterpillar have the resources to train their own apprentices and I must say they do a great job. But it made me think about smaller workplaces that provide apprenticeships and how much training they can provide especially safety training.
I also would like to hear from any of you that have apprentices through a Group Training organisation or an RTO and let me know how much safety training they provide?
But I believe that regardless of the size of the business, or if the training is provided by the employer or a training group it must be the right type of training!
Our kids these days are exposed to much more than I ever was at their age….. And I believe that their perception of risk is a lot higher that mine was. I mean they can play video games that run people over, They can crash a car (on a game) and push the reset button and everything is fixed.
How do we teach them that if you get hurt sometimes there is no reset button?
How far do we go?
I was watching the news tonight and saw a story about footy players and concussion. They are attaching sensors to players heads to measure the impact on some of the tackles and falls that players have.
It is part of a study to look at what can be done to prevent concussion.
Now I’m sure many of you will be saying that the game is getting too soft. Or
harden up! But then you have to look at the impact that a serious injury has on someone's life.
I’m sure if you asked even one person that had an injury or that person's family if these studies are worth it they would immediately say “Yes” we have to do whatever we can to prevent an injury. But it is an interesting discussion and I’m sure there will always be two different views.
I guess for professional players it is their workplace and the employer has to look after their employees.
I caught up with one of the C&B Safe team this
month for a chat. We pulled out the video camera and filmed a little interview.
We will put it up on the website soon but if you were interested in hearing how Rohan got hurt please get in touch and we can get him out to your workplace. Book a Safety Speaker.
His story is one of those incidents that never
should have happened. The old “Swiss Cheese” story where all the holes lined up and it changed his life.
Since losing my son Alex, speaking his name and sharing his journey is something I knew I needed to do right from the beginning.
This is not something that will ever change as today he is still very much a big part of our families life, contrary to what some believe.
Lives don’t move forward, families like mine are changed forever and I know now that we will always be a Work In Progress.
I am also involved each year in The International Workers Memorial Day.
This is a day that serves as a reminder of all those that have lost their lives to a workplace accident.
It’s a hard day to get through but as an active member of VOID (Voice of Industrial Death). New families and friends are welcomed at VOID where ongoing support and advise is provided.
Alex was also an apprentice so my family attend the annual PEER Awards each year. This celebrates graduating apprentices as well as recognition of those excelling in their chosen trade or field.
Our family felt it was important to put forward an award in our son's name back in 2013 which will serves as a constant reminder on the importance of safety measures and training and we look forward to attending these awards again on May 26th.
These are only some of the things that help me on a daily basis.
It is also recognising that Alex is always with me and teaching me to be a better version of myself by sharing what is a very painful journey.
BUT knowing that I can potentially benefit others in doing what I do. And that is sharing his journey. Learn more about Michelle Rath & Alex's Story
