Safety Speakers
July 2017 Newsletter

This month I'd like to name a couple of companies
that I think are doing a great job with Safety.

I give you my views on sharing safety information with each other.
Check out Woody's Words on Skate Parks and helmets and
we announce the winner of the CHOICES Safety Package.

Make sure you Book a Speaker for Safety Month in October
and I have a great joke from my nephew Archie!

Speak to you next month. Woody

Where are our Safety Speakers?

Take care and look out for each other.

Share you safety ideas

I was out at a site a while ago and I was speaking to the Safety Manager that I was working with and talking about a couple of things that I had seen at a similar workplace that had improved traffic flow and safety. The person I was speaking to “Jokingly” said “Nah we wouldn’t want to copy their ideas.”

I had a chuckle about it at the time…. But it made me think “Why do we sometimes feel that we can’t or should not copy other people's good ideas” especially when it comes to safety.

I have even worked with some sites that are owned by the same parent company that do a great job at one site yet the other site does not adopt the same ways of doing things for fear of “Copying”.

C’mon…. We are not kids any more, if you have something that works at your business then share the shit out of it!

Write about it in your company newsletter, post it on your BookFace pages! And get your managers and HR people to actively promote it.

How good would you feel if an idea or a system you came up with stopped someone from getting hurt!

Veolia Qld Commits Big Time

Late last year we started discussions with Veolia in Qld about getting a strong safety message to ALL of their Qld operations. After months of planning and logistics it finally came together last month. I was invited to do a “Road Trip” with the General Manager SHEQ Clint Theil and over a 2 week period we travelled to most of the Qld Veolia workplaces to share my story and messages.

Now the reason I tell you this and actually name the company is that it is a huge commitment and effort to do this and I feel Veolia needs a pat on the back.
It’s simple to ring us up and arrange for a Safety Speaker to come out to a workplace, but when you have to do it at multiple sites and at the same time ensure that it does not interrupt everything else that has to keep being done it is a huge task.
Each site also had a BBQ or a lunch break immediately after the session to give the message time to sink in and also the opportunity for people to ask me questions “One on One”
It worked really well and I received many positive messages that it was one of the best safety initiatives that they had seen.

So Congratulations to Veolia and I hope other
businesses follow your lead.

Another company that I want to name this month that I feel is doing a great job is Orrcon Steel. Many of you know that I send out my Woody’s Words weekly video messages. I know that some businesses share these at toolbox talks or pre start meetings.

One company that has been using them is Orrcon Steel in Brisbane.

But they did something different this month.

They invited me up to their site and then I hid in an office while everyone came into the training room. They showed my Woody’s Words Year in Review  video message but then the Site Manager came and got me and introduced me to the group. I have to say it was quite embarrassing and humbling for me.

Many of the people told me they enjoyed watching my Woody’s Words.

So thanks to Orrcon Steel for supporting my weekly messages
and for getting me out to meet your people.

Woody’s Words Competition Results

Thanks to everyone that entered the competition to win a CHOICES The James Wood Story Safety Training Package.

We are pleased to announce that the winner is Sandy Alp from HSEMA in Darwin. Sandy suggested I explain how I go shopping, use public transport, asked if my family gets frustrated with my situation, how do I cope with air travel….. And a few other great questions that I will cover in future Woody’s Words.

Thanks Sandy and I hope you can use the package with your company and the work you do.
If you want to see what Sandy does the HSEMA website is http://www.hsema.com.au/

Skate Parks
In a recent Woody’s Words I talked about when do kids stop wearing helmets at skate parks?
I’d love to hear from you on your views on this.

Do you have kids that use skate parks?

Do you ask/tell them to wear a helmet?
Do you see them wearing one even if you have not told them.

Send me your thoughts to
