This month I was lucky enough to be invited to Brunei to deliver the keynote opening speech at the 2017 HSSE Construction Conference. I have to admit that I was honoured to be a part of this event and I was impressed. There were some great speakers, panel discussions, a trade exhibition and some great food. If you get the chance get to Brunei make sure you take some time to look at some of the amazing bridge projects currently underway.
There was no problem with language as we were all speaking
“Safety”. Thanks to Confex for inviting me to be part of this great conference, view photos here.
This month was a big one for the C&B Safe team. For the first time we had several safety speakers at the same conference at the same time.
We were invited to share our stories with the NSW Ambulance service at their state Safety and Culture Summit in Sydney.
Michelle, Greg and James travelled to NSW to give the attendees a different perspective on the service that they provide to the community. Feedback from the summit was great as many of these members don’t always see or hear the outcomes of some of the incidents they are called to attend. The summit had some pretty impressive speakers including Mark Donaldson VC who talks about leadership, David Evans a Qantas pilot who was on board QF32 when an engine blew up who talked about working together under pressure to deal with a situation and many other impressive speakers. It was great to be a part of this day and our messages were well received.
Michelle also shares her thoughts from the day…
Recently I was given the opportunity to co present with my colleagues James and Greg for the NSW Ambulance. It was a pretty important day for all 3 of us to be invited to such an elaborate event in their calendar.
Why?
The answer for me is simple, because of what has happened to us, our lives have been touched by those that work in this field. Speaking for myself personally and since that fateful day, I have struggled to even drive alongside an Ambulance or paramedic car because of what happened to my son.
To this day I still freeze if one pulls up alongside me at a set of traffic lights. I close my eyes and try to wish it away as my body still tingles with pain and sadness.
But the reality is sometimes to heal, is to confront situations head on. So that’s what I did, and in doing and as emotional as it was…. I realised that those attending are no different to us.
They are professionals and they too can be affected long term by the job they carry out on a daily basis.
They are not invincible, they have families to go home to, and at the
end of their shift that’s exactly what they deserve. And that’s all any of us want!!!
It seems that every week or every month there is something we are meant to focus on. But ask someone who has had a serious injury or someone close to them has been killed if they need a specific month or day to make them focus on what happened to them or to someone close to them!
The answer is NO….. every day after someone gets hurt or killed is a reminder of what has happened.
But it is important to remind others that have not been hurt or lost someone how important it is to go home each day and that is why we have Safety Month.
We have some speakers still with dates available in October, or even in September or November if that fits in better with your training plans so get in touch now and
My daughter has a pretty good understanding of Safety.
She knows how I got hurt at work and some of the other things that can cause someone to be injured.
She is also aware of things that can protect you like Seatbelts and helmets but that is because she is exposed to it and we probably talk about safety more than most families.
But I was really happy to hear the other week that a little mate of mine called Cooper who is only 6 years old saw some other boys riding their bikes without a helmet on and he told them that they need to put their helmets on. And the next time I caught up with Cooper he said to me,
“James you need to speak to these kids to tell them why they should wear a helmet”
Well done Cooper!!
Safety on a Global Scale
This is totally off my normal safety topics but have any of you been thinking about what’s happening in the world at a Global Level when it comes to safety?
There are a few big boys playing stupid games with the safety of the planet.
You have a North Korean President, the American President, The Russian President and the Chinese all playing these stupid games with the safety of our
planet.
The frustrating thing here is that I can’t think of anything to “Fix” it…..
